The People’s Advocate urges the authorities and the population to make a solidarity effort to overcome the health crisis

The People’s Advocate, Mihail Cotorobai, is alarmed by the worsening of the epidemiological situation in the country and the catastrophic situation of the health system more than three months after the beginning of the health crisis in the Republic of Moldova.

The dramatic increase in the number of COVID-19 diseases in recent days to a record 406 cases of infection is proof that the response to the epidemic was not in line with the danger level  of the new type of Coronavirus.

According to the People’s Advocate, the population did not treat this threat to public health and safety with due seriousness, attention and responsibility. This is the reason why the current stage has been reached, which requires a change of approaches and attitudes in order to face the crisis and overcome it with as few human lives as possible, but also not to collapse the medical system that is about to give in to pressure and the effort he was subjected to from the beginning of the epidemic. The progress if the situation demonstrates, at the same time, what consequences may be ignored by the political factor of all the recommendations of doctors from the country and of the WTO regarding the way of managing the epidemic, claims the People’s Advocate.

Mihail Cotorobai calls on the population to strictly observe the rules of social distancing and hygiene meant to stop the spread of the Coronavirus epidemic. The relaxation measures taken by the authorities must be understood correctly. The danger of infection and spread of the virus has not disappeared. The People’s Advocate urges people to be vigilant and responsible for their own health and life, as well as, those of those close to them and members of the community. Respecting the doctors’ recommendations, respecting the right of other people to life and health, mentions the People’s Advocate.

Mihail Cotorobai also emphasizes that the authorities will remain powerless in the face of the epidemic, if the population continues to show indifference to their own health and public health. Due to lack of discipline and irresponsibility, we have reached 406 contaminations a day and we will be able to remain a red zone country for a long time, being closed to everyone around us.

At the same time, the People’s Advocate addresses the authorities with the urge to analyze in detail within the Extraordinary National Commission for Public Health, the latest developments and to adopt the necessary measures to improve the situation. The experience of other states that have achieved favorable results in counteracting COVID-19 could be edifying for the Republic of Moldova.
